The wood sector has a strong presence in Spanish industry in terms of number of companies and the employment generated, with some 233.430 workers being employed in the sector.
In general terms, the wood industry covers the transformation of wood into consumer products. When making a simple classification, we may distinguish between the primary transformation industry, producing semi-manufactured products (sawn wood, board and industrial wood preparation) and secondary transformation which produces end products (packaging and packing, furniture, joinery…) and, to close the circle, wood recycling companies. The sector is subsequently wide-ranging both in terms of the number of activities and the companies engaged in the same. These latter being primarily small and medium-sized companies.
The Spanish wood sector is currently undergoing change to convert challenges into opportunities and to gain in competitiveness, with strong emphasis being placed on innovation and the development of technology and sustainability.
